Alongside there is the Federal Wage System (WG), which is used for civilian federal blue-collar employees The Senior Executive Service and the Executive Schedule are employed by federal employees who are high-ranking, and various other pay schedules that are used by various government agencies, such as The United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Foreign Service, the remaining 29 percent were paid in different systems. Since 2009, some government employees were also paid according to Pay Bands.

Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

It is broken down into 15 grades (GS-1, GS-2, etc. ) Each grade further divided into 10 steps (GS-10, etc.). In the past, there were three General Services (GS) “super grades,” which were eliminated in the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 and replaced by the Senior Executive Service (now known as the Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale) and the more current Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale.

Most posts in the competitive service are compensated in accordance with the GS. Additionally, it is the General Schedule (GS) is used as a foundation to determine pay rates for a variety of occupations within the excluded service. The grade designation “GG” is used by various posts within the excepted service, including “GG-12” and “GG-13,” among others. These pay levels are similar to the rates for GSs as published by the government.

The entry-level positions are typically found at areas of GS-1 to GS-7 classification levels, whereas middle-level positions are typically found between grades 8 and 12 and the highest-level jobs (such as senior managers, highly skilled technicians, and doctors) are available in grades 13 through 15. A new GS employee is typically allocated to the initial step of their GS grade. However, the employer has the right to make the first appointment at the higher level to encourage recruitment (other organizations may assign the employee at a higher grade). In the end, many professional occupations define entry-level mid-level posts in two-grade increments. For instance, an employee could move from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and then up to General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

After having completed a certain length of service with at least a decent manner, permanent employees below the tenth step of their level are usually qualified for increments in step. In a typical progression that lasts five years of (one year) elapse between steps 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4, then 104 weeks (two years) pass between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7. Finally after that, the 156 weeks (three years) occur between the steps of 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the final step is completed at the 10th step. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on contrary, could be given to an employee in recognition of exceptional job performance. A QSI advances the employee one level within-grade regardless of the time spent at the prior step. If a QSI is granted, the date of the QSI is the date that will be used as the starting point of the next step increment in which case (if further increases in step are given in accordance with the standard procedure) will reduce the amount of time needed for an employee to achieve the ultimate step in a grade.
