OPM 2022 Pay Scale GSGS Pay Scale 2022 – For the employees of the United States civil service, the General Schedule (GS) is by far the most common pay scale. A substantial portion of white-collar professions (professional technical, administrative and clerical jobs) are part of the GS classification. As of the date at the time of writing, 71 percent of civilian employees were compensated under the GS. These are the same as GS pay rates which are now public.

Alongside it, there’s also the Federal Wage System (WG) which is used by civilian federal blue-collar employees The Senior Executive Service and the Executive Schedule, which are used by federal employees who are high-ranking, as well as other pay schedules that are unique to the country used by some agencies like the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Foreign Service, the remaining 29 percent was paid under other systems. Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

It is broken down into 15 classes (GS-1, G-2, etc. ) Each grade further divided into 10 steps (GS-10, etc.). Formerly, there were three General Services (GS) “super grades,” which were abolished by the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. They were replaced by the Senior Executive Service (now known as the Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale) and the more modern Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale.

Most posts that are part of the competitive service will be paid according to the GS. Additionally it is the General Schedule (GS) is used as a foundation in determining the pay rate for various occupations in the excluded service. The grade designation “GG” is used by numerous posts within the excluded service, for example “GG-12” and “GG-13,” as well as other posts. For GGs, the pay rate are equal to the pay rates for GSs, as provided by the federal government.

Entry-level employment is often found in those in the GS-1 through GS-7 classification levels, whereas middle-level roles are usually found in grades 8 through 12 and the highest-level jobs (such as senior managers, highly skilled technicians, and doctors) can be found between the grades of 13 and 15. A new GS employee is typically allocated to the first step of their GS grade. But, the employer does have the authority to allow the first appointment to be at higher levels to encourage recruitment (other agencies could place the employee in a higher grade). This is why the majority of professional professions categorize entry-level to mid-level jobs in two-grade increments. For example, an employee could move from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and then up to General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

Following the completion of a specific length of service in a minimum acceptable way, permanent workers below the tenth step of their grade are often qualified to step increments. In the typical progression that lasts 52 weeks (one year) go by between the steps of 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4. Then, up to 104 months (two years) occur between steps 4-5, 5-6, and 6-7. Then, the 156 weeks (three years) elapse between the steps of 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the final step is reached at step 10. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on contrary, could be awarded to an employee in celebration of their exceptional performance at work. A QSI raises the employee one step up within the grade, regardless of the amount of time they spent at the previous step. Assuming a QSI is granted, the date of the QSI is the date that will be used as the starting point for the following step increase that (if subsequent step increases are granted as per the regular process) will reduce the total time required for an employee to achieve the last step within a grade.
