For example, a worker would advance from the General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and then to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8 and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

After having completed a certain duration of service with at least a decent manner, permanent workers who are below the tenth step of their class are usually eligible for increments of step. In a typical progression, two years and 52 months (one year) are elapsed between steps 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4. Then an additional 104 weeks (two years) elapse between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7, and finally the final an average of 156 weeks (three years) are elapsed between steps 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the ultimate level is reached in step 10. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on the other hand, maybe offered to employees in the recognition of outstanding performance in their job. A QSI advances the employee one grade within the same level, regardless of the amount of time they spent at the previous step. If a QSI is granted then the date of the QSI becomes the start date of the next step increment in which case (if additional step increases are granted according to the normal procedure) will reduce the amount of time needed for an employee to achieve the final step within a grade.
