Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

The majority of positions that are part of the competitive service will be compensated in accordance with the GS. In addition to that, this General Schedule (GS) is used as the basis for determining pay rates for various occupations in the excepted service. The grade designation “GG” is used by several posts in the excepted service, including “GG-12” and “GG-13,” among others. Pay rates of GGs is nearly equal to the pay rates for GSs that are reported by the government.
Entry-level jobs are usually found in areas of GS-1 up to GS-7 classification levels. However, mid-level jobs are available in the grades 8-12 and higher-level positions (such as senior managers, highly skilled technicians, and doctors) are typically found in the grades 13 to 15. An incoming GS employee is usually assigned to the initial step of their GS grade. However, the employer has the right to make the first appointment to be at an upper level to encourage recruitment (other organizations may assign the employee at a higher grade). Therefore, the majority of professional professions categorize entry-level to mid-level jobs in two-grade increments. For example, a worker would advance from the General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and lastly, to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.
Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade
After having completed a certain time period at a minimum in a satisfactory way, permanent workers below the tenth step in their level are usually qualified to step increments. In the typical progression that lasts five years of (one year) go by between the steps of 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4. Then up to 104 months (two years) pass between the steps of 4-5, 5-6 and 6-7. Lastly, up to 156 weeks (three years) are elapsed between the steps of 8-9, 7-8 and 9-10, until the final step is reached at step 10. A “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on contrary, might be given to an employee in the recognition of outstanding performance in their job. A QSI advances the employee one step within-grade, regardless of the time they’ve spent at the previous step. Assuming the grant of a QSI is granted then the date of the QSI is then the date of the beginning of the next step increment and (if further increases in step are given in accordance with the standard procedure) will cut down the amount of time needed to allow an employee to achieve the ultimate step in the grade.
