For example, an employee could move from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and then to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8 and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

When they have completed a specified time frame in at least an acceptable way, permanent workers that are not at the tenth stage of their level are usually eligible to step increments. In a typical progression of two years and 52 months (one year) are elapsed between steps 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4. After that, the 104-week period (two years) are elapsed between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7, and finally, 156 weeks (three years) are elapsed between steps 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the final step is completed at the step number 10. A “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on contrary, could be offered to employees in celebration of their exceptional performance at work. A QSI increases the employee by one level within-grade regardless of the amount of time they have spent at the prior step. Assuming an QSI is granted, the date of the QSI is the date that will be used as the starting point for the subsequent step increase and (if additional step increases are given in accordance with the regular process) will cut down the time it takes for an employee to complete the final step of the grade.
