Therefore, the majority of professional professions categorize entry-level to mid-level jobs in two-grade increments. For instance, an employee will move up from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and eventually on to General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8 and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

After completing a set time frame in a minimum acceptable manner, permanent workers who are below the tenth step of their grade are often eligible for increments in step. In a typical progression one year, two years and 52 months (one year) go by between steps 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4. Then an additional 104 weeks (two years) occur between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7, and finally after that, 156 weeks (three years) pass between the steps of 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the ultimate step is completed at the step number 10. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”) On the other hand, may be awarded to an employee in the recognition of outstanding performance in their job. A QSI advances the employee one step up within the grade, regardless of the time they’ve spent at the previous step. Assuming the grant of a QSI is granted and the date of the QSI becomes the start date for the following step increase, which (if subsequent step increases are granted according to the regular process) will reduce the time it takes for employees to be able to take the final step within a grade.
