2022 GS Pay TablesGS Pay Scale 2022 – Within the United States civil service, the General Schedule (GS) is by far the most widely used pay scale. A substantial portion of white-collar professions (professional technical, administrative and clerical jobs) are part of the GS classification. At the time of writing, 71 percent of civilian government workers were paid under the GS. These rates are comparable to GS pay rates that are now public.

In addition to there is the Federal Wage System (WG) which is employed for federal blue-collar civilian employees, the Senior Executive Service and the Executive Schedule are utilized by federal employees who are high-ranking, and also other unique pay plans employed by certain agencies like The United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Foreign Service, the remaining 29 percent of employees were compensated under different system. Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

It is broken down into 15 grades (GS-1, GS-2, etc. ), and each grade further divided into ten steps (GS-10, etc.). Formerly, there were three General Services (GS) “super grades,” which were abolished by the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, and were replaced with the Senior Executive Service (now known as the Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale) and the more current Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale.

The majority of jobs that are part of the competitive service will be compensated in accordance with the GS. In addition, this General Schedule (GS) is utilized as a base to establish pay rates for various occupations in the excepted service. The grade designation “GG” is used by many posts of the excepted service, including “GG-12” and “GG-13,” in addition to other posts. For GGs, the pay rate is nearly exactly the same as the pay rates for GSs, as published by the government.

Entry-level jobs are usually found among classes ranging from GS-1 through GS-7 classification levels, while middle-level roles are usually found in grades 8 through 12 and high-level roles (such as high-skilled managers, senior managers technicians and doctors) can be found in the grades 13 to 15. An incoming GS employee is usually assigned to the first level of their GS grade. However, the employer has an option to give the first appointment to be made at a higher step as a recruitment incentive (other agencies may place an employee in a higher grade). In the end, many professional occupations classify entry-level to mid-level positions in two-grade increments. For example, a worker will move up from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and then to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

When they have completed a specified time frame at a minimum in a satisfactory manner, permanent workers who are below the tenth stage of their level are usually eligible to step increments. In the typical progression that lasts two years and 52 months (one year) are elapsed between steps 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4, then 104 weeks (two years) are elapsed between steps 4-5, 5-6, and 6-7. Lastly the final an average of 156 weeks (three years) elapse between steps 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, till the last step is completed at the 10th step. A “quality step increase” (“QSI”), on contrary, might be offered to employees in appreciation of their outstanding job performance. A QSI elevates the employee one step up within the grade, regardless of of time they’ve spent at the previous step. Assuming the grant of a QSI is granted then the date of the QSI becomes the beginning date of the next step increment in which case (if further increases in step are granted according to the standard procedure) will cut down the total time required for employees to be able to take the final step within the grade.
