2022 GS Locality Pay TablesGS Pay Scale 2022 – In the United States civil service, the General Schedule (GS) is by far the most widely used pay scale. A substantial portion of white-collar professions (professional technical, administrative as well as clerical posts) are covered under the GS classification. As of the date at the time of writing, 71 percent of civilian workers were compensated under the GS. They are similar to GS pay rates, which were released to the public.

Alongside it, there’s also the Federal Wage System (WG) which is used by federal blue-collar civilian employees and the Senior Executive Service and the Executive Schedule are also used for federal employees with high rank, and also other unique pay plans that are used by various government agencies, like The United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Foreign Service, the remaining 29 percent were paid in other methods. Since 2009, certain government workers have also been compensated in accordance with Pay Bands.

Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

It is divided into 15 grades (GS-1, the GS-2, etc. ) Each grade is further subdivided into ten steps (GS-10, etc.). In the past, there were three General Services (GS) “super grades,” which were eliminated by the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. They were replaced by the Senior Executive Service (now known as the Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale) and the more modern Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale.

Most posts within the competitive service are paid in accordance with the GS. Furthermore this General Schedule (GS) is used as the basis to determine pay rates for a variety of occupations within the excepted service. The designation for grade “GG” is used by numerous posts within the excluded service, such as “GG-12” and “GG-13,” in addition to other posts. The pay rates for GGs are equal to the pay rates for GSs, as published by the government.

Entry-level jobs are usually found at areas of GS-1 to GS-7 classification levels, while middle-level positions are typically found in grades 8 through 12, and top-level positions (such as high-skilled managers, senior managers technicians, and doctors) are available between the grades of 13 and 15. The first GS employee is usually assigned to the initial step of their GS grade. However, the employer is given an option to give the first appointment to be at higher levels as an incentive for recruitment (other organizations may assign the employee at a higher grade). As a result, most professions in the professional sector classify entry-level mid-level positions with two grade increments. As an example, an employee is able to move from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and eventually to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

After completing a set time period at a minimum in a satisfactory manner, permanent employees below the tenth step in their class are usually eligible to step increments. In a typical progression of 52 weeks (one year) elapse between steps 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4. After that, the 104-week period (two years) occur between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7. Lastly the final the 156 weeks (three years) pass between the steps of 8-9, 7-8 and 9-10, until the final stage is reached at the 10th step. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”) is, on the other hand, may be given to an employee in the recognition of outstanding performance in their job. A QSI elevates the employee one step within-grade, regardless of the amount of time they spent at the previous step. In the event that an QSI is granted then the date of the QSI becomes the beginning date for the subsequent step increase, which (if additional step increases are granted in accordance with the standard procedure) will cut down the total time required for an employee to reach the last step within the grade.
