2022 Federal Pay ScaleGS Pay Scale 2022 – Among the members of the United States civil service, the General Schedule (GS) is by far the most commonly used pay scale. A substantial portion of white-collar jobs (professional technical, administrative, and clerical positions) are part of the GS classification. However, the employer is given the authority to allow the first appointment to be at a higher step to encourage recruitment (other agencies may place the employee in a higher grade). As a result, most professions in the professional sector classify entry-level mid-level positions with two grade increments. For instance, an employee will move up from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and lastly, up to General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8 and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

Following the completion of a specific time period at a minimum in a satisfactory way, permanent workers below the tenth step in their grade are often eligible for increments of step. In a typical progression, two years and 52 months (one year) pass between the steps of 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4, then the 104-week period (two years) are elapsed between steps 4-5, 5-6, and 6-7. Lastly the final the 156 weeks (three years) occur between steps 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the final step is completed at the step number 10. The term “quality step increase” (“QSI”) On the other hand, may be offered to employees in the recognition of outstanding performance in their job. A QSI elevates the employee one grade within the same level, regardless of the amount of time they spent at the previous step. Assuming that a QSI is granted then the date of the QSI becomes the start date for the subsequent step increase, which (if additional step increases are given in accordance with the regular procedure) will reduce the amount of time needed for employees to be able to take the final step within a grade.
