2022 Federal Pay Scale OPMGS Pay Scale 2022 – Within the United States civil service, the General Schedule (GS) is by far the most commonly used pay scale. A substantial portion of white-collar positions (professional technical, administrative, and clerical positions) belong to the GS classification. In addition to there is the Federal Wage System (WG) which is used by civilian federal blue-collar employees and the Senior Executive Service and the Executive Schedule are utilized by federal employees who are high-ranking, and other unique pay schedules employed by certain agencies such as those of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Foreign Service, the remaining 29 percent of employees were compensated under other methods. Grade And Step Structure Are Important Considerations

It is divided into 15 classes (GS-1, GS-2, etc. ) and each grade is further subdivided into 10 steps (GS-10, etc.). There were previously three General Services (GS) “super grades,” which were eliminated in the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, and replaced with the Senior Executive Service (now known as the Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale) and the more recent Senior Level (non-supervisory) pay scale.

The majority of jobs that are part of the competitive service will be paid in accordance with the GS. Additionally to that, it is the General Schedule (GS) is used as the basis to establish pay rates for many occupations within the service that is not excepted. The grade designation “GG” is used by various posts within the excepted service, including “GG-12” and “GG-13,” in addition to other posts. These pay levels are nearly similar to the rates for GSs provided by the federal government.

The entry-level positions are typically found among areas of GS-1 through GS-7 classification levels, whereas middle-level roles are usually found between grades 8 and 12 and higher-level positions (such as high-skilled managers, senior managers technicians and doctors) can be found in the grades 13 to 15. New GS employee is typically allocated to the first level of their GS grade. However, employers have an option to give the first appointment at higher levels as an incentive for recruitment (other agencies could place an employee in a higher grade). Therefore, the majority of professions in the professional sector classify entry-level mid-level jobs in two-grade increments. For example, a worker is able to move from General Schedule 5 to the General Schedule 7 and then to the General Schedule 9, and eventually to the General Schedule 11 without passing through grades 6, 8, and 10.

Progression Between Grades Or Between Steps Within The Same Grade

When they have completed a specified length of service in at least an acceptable manner, permanent employees below the tenth step in their class are usually eligible for increments of step. In the typical progression of two years and 52 months (one year) are elapsed between the steps of 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4, then 104 weeks (two years) elapse between the steps of 5-6, 4-5 and 6-7, and finally after that, the 156 weeks (three years) are elapsed between the steps of 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10, until the final step is completed at the step number 10. A “quality step increase” (“QSI”) On the other hand, maybe awarded to an employee in recognition of exceptional job performance. A QSI elevates the employee one level within-grade regardless of of time they spent at the previous step. Assuming a QSI is granted then the date of the QSI becomes the start date for the following step increase and (if subsequent step increases are granted according to the normal procedure) will reduce the time it takes for an employee to achieve the ultimate step in a grade.
